One-year TESOL Certificate Program Highlights

  • Twelve-month program (Four 10-week sessions)
  • Full-time study including evening classes.
  • Students may enroll in classes from the Intensive English Program (IEP) or Improving Oral Fluency (IOF) at no additional cost.
  • Programs begin winter, spring, summer and fall.
  • Advanced-level English required (minimum TOEFL 523 with TSE 40; 69 iBT; with minimum 22 on speaking; IELTS 5.5 with TSE 40.
  • Minimum age: 18.

About the Program

Designed for advanced speakers of English, the TESOL program focuses on specific teaching skills including conversation, pronunciation, listening and speaking, grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and American culture. The TESOL program:

  • Introduces and develops familiarity with the most up-to-date teaching methods.
  • Fosters awareness of language structures.
  • Exposes participants to a variety of models of classroom teaching.
  • Develops confidence in using computer-assisted language learning.
  • Explores a variety of textbooks and teaching materials and determines how to best utilize these within a curricular framework.
  • Focuses on cross-cultural understanding and an appreciation of different learner strategies and styles.
  • Reviews and practices developing and using a variety of assessment instruments.

Gateway to La Sierra University Master’s Degree Program

UC Riverside Extension and La Sierra University offer a collaborative Master’s degree program in which students receive an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from La Sierra University. The program is 45 quarter units and includes:

  • 15 units of the UC Riverside Extension TESOL certificate courses.
  • 30 units (three 10-unit courses) of the La Sierra’s Master Degree Program.
