Whether you are a new or experienced teacher, this program can help you develop skills for teaching English-language learners. You'll learn how to plan and deliver an ESL or EFL lesson, and how to teach specific language skills. You'll also learn current theories behind teaching, observe professional teachers, and even tutor real ESL students. By the end of the program, you'll be ready to teach and inspire English-language learners all over the world, and you'll be prepared for graduate study in Education or TESOL in the United States.

What You'll Learn

Program Objectives

  • How to evaluate students, materials, and teaching contexts to determine the best approaches for teaching.
  • Ways to apply knowledge of linguistics, language acquisition, English grammar, and teaching methods to real teaching scenarios.
  • Methods for creating activities and lesson plans that reflect current and effective approaches to teaching ESL/EFL.
  • How to deliver effective lesson plans through practice teaching events with peers and tutees.
  • How to critically reflect on teaching events and complete a professional teaching portfolio.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites

  • Advanced English language required: TOEFL 550 PBT with TSE 45; or 80 iBT with minimum 23 on Speaking; or IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 on Speaking; or the equivalent.
  • Minimum age: 18 (or high school graduate).
  • No degree required.

Immigration Information

  • This is a full-time program.
  • You must obtain an F-1 (student) visa.

Graduation Requirements

  1. Successfully complete all TESOL coursework with minimum GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0).
  2. Passing grade on the TESOL Portfolio
  3. Students who entered the program with an equivalent to an official language test score must submit one of the following official scores to graduate: TOEFL 550 PBT with TSE 45; or 80 iBT with minimum 23 on Speaking; or IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 on Speaking.

Completion of this program is required for students who intend to pursue the UCR Master's in Education (emphasis in TESOL) Program.
