What You'll Learn

  • Be confident and knowledgeable in performing crime scene investigations.
  • Understand the basics of crime scene management including the proper collection and preservation of evidence, and chain-of-custody issues.
  • Have the technical skills to sample, photograph and recover evidence at a crime scene.

What You Can Do

Positions are available in law enforcement, justice departments or government. They might include:

  • Crime scene investigator
  • Crime scene technician
  • Police identification specialist
  • Forensic scientist

Who Can Attend

Admission Requirements:

  • TOEFL score of 550 (80iBT) or IELTS score of 6.5.
  • Minimum age: 18 (or high school graduate).
  • No degree required.
  • This is a full-time program.
  • You must obtain F-1 (student) visa.

Completion Requirements

Complete 17 of the required 20 units to earn the CSI certificate during the CSI Summer Academy.

Introduction to Criminal Law and Procedure (3 units)

This course is required to earn the CSI certificate, but is not included in the summer academy coursework. To satisfy this requirement, you can:

  • Take the course at UCR Extension.
  • Request an equivalent course to be transferred from another accredited college or university (transcripts required).

What's Included

Students will be provided with all course materials, texts, and parking.

Events:

  • Welcome reception.
  • Farewell reception.
  • "Evening with the Experts" lecture series (July).

Field Trips (including transportation):

  • Local crime labs.
  • Coroner's office.

Required Equipment

Students must bring a camera to class. Learn more about required skills and equipment.

Where to Stay

Recommended Housing

International Village (IV)

  • Conveniently located next to the Extension Center, restaurants, banks and the main UCR campus.
  • Offers three types of living arrangements: studio, single, or double.
  • Open year-round.
  • For adult students (age 18 or older) only.

Homestay

  • Stay with an American family to practice English daily and learn about American life and customs.
  • Fully furnished room; double-occupancy.
  • All meals and daily transportation (to/from school or school-related activities) included.
  • No minimum age; no minimum stay.
