Business
Idioms and Functions
This class is targeted towards the practice of speech functions necessary for
business transactions. Students will practice and master various forms of formal
speech including socializing, telephoning, conducting meetings, negotiations,
and formal presentations. Students will also learn the appropriate use of business
jargon and idioms and their use in everyday business language. Interactive activities
in class such as role-plays, simulations, and presentations will be an important
part of this class. |
Business
Computing and Writing
For Business Computing students will learn basic use of MS Word, MS Excel, MS
PowerPoint, MS Publisher. Assignments for all classes will be produced electronically
using the above programs. Students will be given specific guidance on using the
Internet for research projects. They will be provided with a detailed webliography
of resources to use for projects and assignments.
In the Business Writing section of this class, students will learn how to produce
well-organized and formatted written communication. They will gain a clear understanding
of all major kinds of written correspondence including memos, letters, resumes,
cover letters, reports, brochures, and a business magazine. Applicable aspects
of form and structure of the language will be explored and practiced in class.
Students will spend adequate time mastering language structures for business
writing such as formal phrases, passive tone, negative indication, persuasion,
appropriate word usage, and punctuation. Students will build critical writing
skills by studying the structure of a business document including topic sentences,
paragraph organization, conclusions, formats, editing, proof reading (self and
peer correction) and brevity. |

Business Culture, Readings, and Vocabulary
This class will familiarize students with business texts by studying real life
cases and news articles from companies around the world. Students will
gain reading techniques that will help them analyze and understand business
texts clearly. Students will read texts from newspapers, magazines, and
other business related sources. Vocabulary and context will be given importance
while students explore cultural aspects of conducting business in the US
and abroad. Through a comparative analysis of business cultures students
will attain a broader understanding of cultural differences crucial in
conducting international business.

Principles and Discussion
In this class students will learn basic concepts commonly applicable in the business
world. These concepts will also be applicable to projects and assignments throughout
the course. Students will gain terminology for topics such as negotiations, cross-cultural
and interpersonal communication, investments, business planning and management,
marketing and promotion, financial planning, etc. This will be a discussion-based
class offering practical explanations of business concepts that students will
use in their class projects throughout the course. Students will have the freedom
to be creative and share experiences and ideas while developing their own companies
and writing original business plans in teams. |
