  PROFESSIONAL INTERPRETATION
English/Spanish

An intensive 4-week program designed for those who would like to be professional interpreters or professional interpreters who would like to enhance their skills. Daytime classes include lectures and site visits to places of professional interest such as the Riverside County Courthouse.

INSTRUCTORS
The lead instructor, Olivia Johnston, will be teaching the majority of the program, with sessions by guest lecturers with expertise in specialized topics. Ms. Johnston is a California state-certified court interpreter and teaches interpretation courses in a program she helped develop at UCR Extension. Ms. Johnston is the first person from the Inland Empire to serve on the 19-member California Court Interpreters Advisory Panel.

TUITION
The tuition for the program is $2150. For additional fees, please see additional costs.

Application deadline is one month before the starting date of the program.

Prerequisite: To be admitted, candidates must pass a qualifying written examination to determine their level of fluency in both English and Spanish.

Bullet SIGHT TRANSLATION

The acquisition of appropriate English/Spanish and Spanish/English vocabulary and sight (oral) translation skills used in criminal and civil court matters. Materials refer to criminal, civil, medical and financial fields.

Bullet CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETATION

Consecutive interpretation techniques as practiced in courts and other hearings. Tapes, court transcripts and other legal documents will be used and note-taking skills will be developed employing principally an adaptation of the Rozan Method.

Bullet SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION

Techniques such as shadowing, decalage and other memory-retention skills to assist professionals' flow, register, target language grammar and vocabulary necessary for professional interpreting.

Bullet PROTOCOL AND ETHICS

Ethical principles and standards in professional interpretation including accurate interpretation, impartiality, confidentiality, dress codes, preparedness, conflicts of interests and the interpreters' code of professional ethics.
