Design-Your-Own-Program (DYO)

ESL programs in California
Flexible program designed to meet individual needs. Students may choose any combination of Intensive English classes, Extension classes and UCR classes for Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters (UCR classes are not included in the summer.) Program is offered in 10-week sessions throughout the year.

Students must satisfy minimum F-1 requirements. The tuition includes Intensive English classes, UCR classes, all non-computer Extension classes, and two Extension classes held in a computer lab.

There is no limit for Intensive English classes. However, classes other than Intensive English classes are limited to a total maximum of 12 units. Also, any additional Extension class held in a computer lab (beyond the two allowed in the program) must be paid for separately.

Enrollments can not be guaranteed prior to beginning of the quarter for any Extension and UC Riverside classes as spaces may be limited in certain classes. Please inquire.

All participants who have not submitted the required TOEFL score with their application must take a placement test on Registration Day in order to demonstrate the required advanced English proficiency. If your test results show high intermediate or lower proficiency, we will advise you to take the Intensive English Program instead.

DYO students may enroll in long-term certificate programs.

Students interested in UC Riverside classes during the summer quarter must enroll in the Summer Sessions program through the DYO program.

“DYO is a perfect program for students who want to improve not only English but also other skills. I have been taking English classes and some classes related to education and computers. I can also take a class on campus with American students. I believe I have been improving my English skills a lot through the classes, which require expressing myself and having discussions with native speakers. The combination of English classes and other subjects using English can help you progress dramatically.”

American students
"I think DYO is an excellent program combining English classes, classes on campus with American students, and students in professional certificate programs. Besides gaining knowledge every day, I learned a lot about different cultures and I met wonderful friends. The only requisite to achieving success is working hard and opening your mind to a universe of culture.”
