Academic-Year Certificate Programs

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

For more than 20 years UC Extension has served as the primary source of environmental education and training for California business and industry. Our programs emphasize sustainability and responsibility as essential elements of long-term economic success. By providing an integrated understanding of the science, technology and social issues behind environmental issues and decisions, our instructors provide not only specific, experience-based knowledge but a framework for independent decision-making.

Academic-Yer Certificate Programs

CURRICULUM – 3 Quarter Sessions

Fall Quarter (September-December)
Required Courses (select four):
•  Foundations of Occupational Health and Safety
•  Process Safety and Risk Management
•  Principles of Hazardous Materials Management
•  Industrial Wastewater Technology
•  Integrating Continuous Quality Improvement Into Safety and Business Risk Management

Elective:
•  Introduction to ArcGIS

Winter Quarter (January-April)
Required Courses:
•  Safety Hazards in the Occupational Environment: Recognition and Prevention
•  Underground Storage Tanks: Law and Technology
•  Regulatory Framework for Toxic and Hazardous Substances
•  Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization
Spring Quarter (April-June)
Required Courses:
•  Environmental Toxicology and Risk Assessment
•  Health Hazards in the Occupational Environment: Recognition and Prevention
•  Cross-connection Control and Backflow Prevention
•  Storm Water Regulations and Management
Environmental Health and Safety

Length:  36-week. 3 x 12-week session.
Days per week: 5
Average class size: 14
When is it offered? September to June
Required proficiency: minimum TOEFL® score of 523 (paper)/193 (computer), TOEIC® score of 700 or above, TSE® score of 45 or above and be at the 600 level of UC Riverside Extension’s Intensive English Program or equivalent.
Minimum Age:  15
Tuition
The tuition for the entire 36-week (about nine months) program is (please see Schedule & Fees page) .
Application Deadline
Application deadline is one month before the starting date of the program.
Optional Practical Training
Upon completion of an Academic-year Certificate Program, you may be eligible for up to a year of Optional Practical Training (OPT) at an American company.
